Japan has $7.3 billion to spend on an elevator that will go up 22,000 miles into outer space.
No I'm not kidding.
NASA also had plans to built such an elevator, but well you know, there is more important things our country needs to spend it's money on. The purpose of the elevator is to transport cargo as well as people into space without using an expensive shuttle and rocket combo. The technology to actually build something like this is available now, but would obviously need time to perfect.
