T-Mobile officially launched the G1 cell phone today. It is the first to use Google's Android operation system, which despite it being a given to happen was created to battle the iPhone. It features touchscreen interface as well as a slide out keyboard which many people prefer over the iPhone's touchscreen keyboard. Since the phone runs off of a Google made operating system, it works best with Google services like G-Mail and Google Talk for instant messaging. Google maps is also a heavily touted feature and allows you to use Google Street View, another first for a mobile phone. The phone also has access to the Android market places which allows you to buy and install new applications onto the phone much like the iPhone's App Store. The G1 is also the first phone to have access to Amazon's MP3 store which currently has over 6 million songs available to purchase. The phone will be availble in October for the price of $179. Here is a video walk through of the phone showing off its features and user interface.

What do you think of the G1? I think its pretty ugly, but I like the keyboard and the user interface seems like it should be pretty good. Not iPhone good, but good enough for second place.
